it’s amazing to me what makes headlines these days. while millions of gallons of oil spill into the gulf daily, the war in the middle east continues, and the military’s don’t ask, don’t tell policy may be repealed, little girls who aren’t so little anymore come under fire for the wardrobe choices they don as they sing to thousands of fans in spain.
that scantily clad little girl i speak of is miley cyrus. if you are as shocked as i that a little teeny bopper such as miley would grace tuff titties, well i just thought i’d take this opportunity to talk about today’s youth and how things have changed.
at the tender age of 11, miley landed the role that would make her a household name: hanna montana. she stole the hearts of parents and kids alike, turning into a sensation almost overnight. school girl by day, pop star by night, the world watched as miley’s character struggled with her double identity—and it would seem that this double identity miley embodied onscreen would become the focus of the teen idol’s real life as well.
with the show owned, written, and produced by disney, it was also disney who helped miley record and produce her first solo album. with her name and face plastered everywhere from the tv to record stores to the gossip rags, miley was always in the spotlight—a tough spot to be in when you’re trying to live down your teenage years, especially if you’re the star of a hit disney tv show (hello, jaime lynn spears!). yes, we’ve seen miley grow up, and watched her make inevitable mistakes along the way. i mean, what 15-year-old has a live-in boyfriend who is a model? (i won’t even get started with you, angelina jolie.) and remember miley’s scandalous spread in vanity fair, shot by annie leibovitz? her actions may have put her under some scrutiny, but really, we all make mistakes—you just can’t read about all our follies in the latest issue of us weekly.
now the teen has come under fire for her dress and behavior this past weekend at her concert in spain. wearing not much more than a bodysuit, miley fondled her breasts AND other dancers during her performance, and the critics believe this kind of behavior is too sexy for a disney channel star—who is now 17, i thought you should know.
but we’ve seen teens thrust into the spotlight before. take britney spears, for example. she, too, got her start on the disney channel (anyone remember the mickey mouse club?), and we saw the good girl struggle with her “good girl” image, and watched as those dimples went from sweet to seductress as she grew up before our eyes. we realized she wasn’t the pure girl we thought she was when justin timberlake revealed she wasn’t a virgin. she humanized herself before our eyes as we followed her on her starbucks’ runs. she got our pity when we saw the star spiral out of control.
the consequences of teen fame can be severe. and though not all teen queen’s will follow in britney’s footsteps, she does seem to be heading in that direction. and i have but one question: will miley cyrus shave her head, too?
one can only hope.
