mad for the ladies of mad men
to everyone fortunate enough to have cable and smart enough to watch mad men: please don’t spoil the first episode of season 4 for me. i fully intend to find a way to watch it, but my viewing schedule is slightly skewed from the rest of the world’s.
what i should do is buy the season off of itunes or amazon so i could keep up with the drapers & co, because it’s honestly the best show out there right now. the 1960s were groundbreaking times; it’s amazing to see how much our society has changed since then. i mean, when was the last time a show had multiple feminist plotlines? last we saw betty, she was reclaiming her life as she realized she didn’t need to stay in a loveless marriage. joan was working to support her DOCTOR husband who can’t seem to hack it in his scrubs. not only was peggy the first (and only, so far) female copywriter sterling cooper has hired/promoted, but she was the first (and only, so far) to get her own office. (*it is important to note that she asked for both of these things and got them based on her job performance—well, it helped that she kept a few of don’s secrets, but because women were so scarcely given the opportunity to excel in the workplace, let’s let that one slide…) could little sally draper be a lesbian!? i guess we’ll just have to keep watching to find out…
i know i’m not alone in thinking this an amazing show, but i have to also note that matthew weiner isn’t selling this “old-fashioned” show with hard bodies and plunging necklines. no, there is nary a defined muscle in sight—not even the uber-sexy don dons a six-pack. and women look refined and demure in the workplace without any cleavage poking through. who knew that a show that barely bared anything could send approval ratings through the roof?
i ask you hollywood: why don’t you supply more tv shows and movies such as? no one can deny christina hendricks’ beauty; you’ve made a superstar out of the beautiful and beautifully curvy redhead, so who’s gonna be next?
