breastfeeding moms miss the bus

honestly, try as i might, i just can’t stop reporting on breastfeeding stories. they just seem to be busting out of the headlines these days.

the latest took place in england, where new mum laura mckenna, 22, was ordered off a stagecoach manchester bus because she was breastfeeding new son d’marion. “i started to feed d’marion and like normal i lifted my jumper, pulled my t-shirt down and put a blanket over his head so nobody could see anything,” said laura.

the driver, though, seemed transfixed on the actions happening on his route as he stared back at laura through his rearview mirror, and at the next local stop he got up to ask the young woman if she was, in fact, breastfeeding. when laura replied that she was, the driver so kindly asked her to “put them away or get off the bus.”

laura was aghast. she got off the bus.

when laura called the bus company to complain, the FEMALE operator responded: “well you shouldn’t be doing it on a bus, should you?”

i hope you are finding this just as incredulous as i, dear readers. if a woman is breastfeeding in public and takes it upon herself to cover both boob and baby so that no one gets their panties in a twist, then really, what the fuck? the reason breastfeeding has become so controversial as of late is because of so-called “indecent exposure.” while it bothers me that mothers are being frowned upon for having to feed their children (i mean, everyone has to eat), if a woman covers up anything that one might find “disturbing,” let the woman be, for fuck’s sake!

when pressed for a statement regarding the issue, the bus company had this to say: “we fully support mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies… we are taking this matter extremely seriously and are carrying out a thorogh inverstigation into this case.”

i should certainly hope so.
